When Eleanor Gray retired as a postmaster, she started to look for a new hobby. During the time, her daughter Leah was stationed in the U.S. Air Force in Germany. Locals would set up shop to sell beautiful handmade pottery to soldiers and their families. Leah sent some pieces home to her mother and sister-in-law, and they fell in love with the beautiful pottery designs and durability. Eleanor quickly turned her passion for pottery into a family business, so she could share this stunning pottery with all.
Passing down the business from generation to generation, today the store is operated by Eleanor’s daughter, Leah Karbler, and daughter-in-law, Loretta Gray. This women-led and veteran-owned business continues to supply exquisitely crafted, beautiful pottery to enthusiasts, casual collectors and those who enjoy high-quality kitchenware.
Though Eleanor is enjoying her retirement, you will still see her in the store at times lending a hand and sharing her love for pottery with others.
Eleanor started selling Polish pottery at a flea market and then moved the business in 2003 to a storage building on her property in Charm, Ohio. In 2021, we moved to a storefront in Berlin, Ohio. When moving from Charm to Berlin, it was like a homecoming of sorts. The two-story house, which was converted into a storefront on Main Street, was once Eleanor’s grandparent’s home, where she fondly remembers visiting as a child.
Berlin is in the heart of Amish Country, where visitors will find shopping places within feet of each other on Main Street. A pedestrian-friendly stretch of stores, Main Street is dotted with clothing boutiques, antique stores, home décor stores and restaurants. Plus there is lodging so you can spend couple days here exploring all of the fabulous finds.
Patterned and Unikat Pieces
At The Pottery Niche, all of the pottery is hand-painted by artists in the town of Boleslawiec, Poland, making every piece somewhat unique. Most pieces are painted in one of the many popular patterns (like "Peacock"). However, some pieces are painted much more intricately, and are often signed by the artists. These pieces are known as "Unikat," and are truly one-of-a-kind, and feature more colors, and a more complicated design than traditional pieces. An example of two such Unikat pieces can be found in the photo to the left. The Pottery Niche features many popular patterns, as well as Unikat pieces to meet the desires of any collector.
